Benefits: Avoid Meteor Threat
In recent years the Earth has come close to being hit by killer meteors. These meteors came relatively close to Earth, without warning. The size, mass, and gravitational pull of the Earth, and the size, mass and gravitational pull of the meteor must be taken into consideration, in determining what constitutes a near miss.
It will be important for America to maintain manned space leadership in the lunar high ground of space, to guard against such a disaster occurring. A wider area of observation could give more advanced warning. With sufficient warning, nuclear devices could steer a meteor out of harms way.
