General Letter to Governors
The Honorable ...
REQUEST FOR A PROCLAMATION FOR JULY 20, 2009 SPACE EXPLORATION DAY, AND JULY 16 – 24 2009 U.S. SPACE OBSERVANCE REQUEST FOR A LETTER TO BE SENT TO U.S. SENATOR ORRIN HATCH IN SUPPORT OF JULY 20TH SPACE EXPLORATION DAY NONPAID HOLIDAY
July 16 – 24 2009 will mark the 40th anniversary of the first historic manned mission to the surface of the Moon. In the year 2000, the nation's news correspondents listed this event as the second most significant event of the 20th century.
The Utah Space Association would like to ask you to issue a proclamation recognizing July 20, 2009 as Space Exploration Day, and the nine day period of July 16 – 24 2009 as the U.S. Space Observance.
If you require a local person or organization to make the request, please let us know. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the National Space Society have sections and chapters located throughout the nation.
We would like to have a copy of your proclamation on public display at the Utah State Capitol Rotunda, during the U.S. Space Observance.
There is also a national effort to get the July 20th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moonwalk recognized by President Obama as the Space Exploration Day nonpaid Holiday. By executive directive, it would have a legal status equal to Flag Day and Arbor Day, and could become popular with the public. U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah wants U.S. Governors and Senators to back him in this request. Could you please send a letter of support to Senator Hatch, c/o his aid Bryan Hickman, at 104 Hart Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20510. Phone 202-224-5251.
